The reiger begonia, a hybrid of the Begoniaceae family, originated from Central and South America, as well as a few other subtropical regions. The begonia is one of the largest groups of cultivated ornamental plants. Begonias are thought to represent innocence.
The begonia is named after Micheal Begon, a 17th century French govenor of a colony in the Caribbean.
Begonias, which can bloom year round, are large and showy and come in a variety of colors including white, red, yellow, orange and shades of pink. Reiger begonias are full, bushy and low growing flowering plants that tyically reach a height of 30 - 45cm.
Reiger begonias need moist soil, but do not overwater. The plants need bright light indoors and partial shade outdoors. Avoid direct sunlight and keep at an average temperature of 65 - 75°F.
